Since arriving in at our 30th floor apartment with its fabulous views across parts of Johor Bahru and the Strait of Malacca, we have had a birds eye view of the changing landscape. And change it has.
Malaysia is country of approximately 330,000 square kilometres featuring as the 66th largest country in the world rankings, compared to South Africa at 24th, and NZ at 75th.
I use the term “approximately” deliberatley as during our time here I have watched the reclamation of land taking place at a rapid pace literally right in front of me. Day and night these barges spew sand in a constant stream.
As far as I can ascertain this reclamation is simply to be able to have prime waterfront property.
Since watching the below movie (Sand Wars) I feel justified in saying undertaking land reclamation is something that is going to come back and bite us at some point, if not already.
